I’M BACK!

Yes I will admit the running, blogging and tweeting for this event has suffered over the last week. Gone were the live tweets while I ran, the long rambling blogs and even the multiple days of massive distances. Instead it was replaced with moaning about work, tiny blogs and no tweets!

But it’s the week before Christmas and although I have work to do- It’s not as full on as previous weeks.

Just so you know I am off for my run in a few hours so expect a second blog today.

But I want to talk about a message I received at my Cancer Council donation page. I stupidly deleted it before I created a copy of it but the message made a few, rather negative, points. They were-

1.       I walk/run 10-15km every day so what you are doing is easy and not inspiring… go outside and run 3000km for real!

2.       Why should people make a donation to only NSW(the state I live in) based charity…

3.       A family member I know died from Cancer(was sort of proudly stated at the end as justification of the negativity)

I read the post and then deleted it for several main reasons. Primarily, that it was not only completely wrong but also incredibly insensitive and stupid. IF ANYONE CAN WORK OUT HOW TO RETRIEVE DELETED POSTS ONLINE- PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I’LL POST IT.

Lets go through the points above in reverse and discuss why this guy/girl was insane. I know they are likely an internet troll(BASED ON THE FACT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS TO USE THEIR REAL NAME)

Third Point- it is terrible than anyone still dies from cancer. Cancer is something that has affected my family and also has taken family members of some of my closest friends. Surely, if someone you love has been affected, you would cherish any assistance towards cancer research. If not to hope that the pain you felt because of it will not be felt by more people in the future! This bit I found the most interesting because it made me realise whoever posted this is just mentally unstable.

Second Point- (From the little blurb you get about websites on google- and on the Cancer Council Website) “National non-government cancer control organisation with the aim of facilitating prevention, research, support, and care”

This person appears not to know what National is!

First Point- Funnily enough, now I think about this post the more it makes me think that the person who wrote it may even be someone I know who is a complete asshole. But let’s forget that. Firstly, what a great life this person leads where they can walk or run this most days. I have a job, I have a PhD, I have a mortgage, I have a life. So running this outside for real is not going to happen.

Also considering this is not only about charity but also exercise, I need a real way of tracking both distance and calories etc, the gym makes sense. But as I have said in the past- I will convert to the road in the next 6 months if only because I am planning to do a marathon or two.

But you know what, 10km to you might be easy, but for the majority of folks it is tough. For me, it is tough and there are few people I know who could do this. Some people climb mountains or go Sky Diving and it’s easy for them… but is impossible for others. Some people find it easy to be massive assholes(like the person who wrote the comment), for others it’s hard.

But ultimately here is the most important thing. I am getting fit- I am raising some much needed money to charity and at the moment I know of two people (Ole and Sarah) who say they have now started taking up running using my idea as an inspiration. So, ultimately, I am proud of what I am doing and that is the most important thing- not what some shallow, inept and egotistical asshole wrote on the internet.
