Since January 18th, I have run at the gym just once until a day or two ago. As much as the Ipod GPS machines tell you your distance and average time etc, it's impossible to run at a constant pace and keep it constant.
So two days ago, with rain pouring in Sydney, I decided to hit the gym again. I jumped onto the machine and put it on 9km/h, which for me was a pretty quick pace back in November/December. I jogged and found it easy, so I pushed it up to 10km/h. Months ago, this was pretty fast for me and a pace I couldn't handle for long. But it seemed easy. So I kept pushing it up...I found myself running a kilometer in a little under 6 minutes which means I was running on average at 10km/h. I dropped the machine back down to a walking pace to catch my breath, but I wondered, even with a 1:30 walk, could I still run my second kilometer in under 6 minutes, inclusive of the walk. I knew that in order to do it, I would need to get my speed up to like 12-13km/h and guess, what- I did it. So yesterday, I thought to myself, could I do this for 30 minutes. And I did...
So it ends up, all the running over the last month or two outside has translated to me being faster and fitter. I have to admit though, I got a pretty smashing stitch in the last 10 minutes and need to pause for a second every once and a while. It's nice to be reminded that you are getting fitter and stronger. I ended up running 7km after walking 4ish in the day. The final 2km were slow(I did them in 15 minutes), but that still gives me an average speed of somewhere around 9.5km/h. That is the second fastest average speed I have ever run. HUZZAH.
So it shows me, that although I thought I was plateauing fitness wise, in the end I have done pretty darn well. Now as for today- I may take a break as I appear to have run out of time today, but lets see if I can raise the slumbering beast inside and smash out a small run.
